Every year many of us participate in Secret Santa, often arranged at work or within friendship groups. Let's be honest, so you really need some cheap tacky token gift this year, or would you prefer to benefit some great charities? The UK Money Bloggers have collaborated to bring you #GiveOrGift.

I love getting involved in Secret Santa swaps – they are a great way to stick to a budget at Christmas, but they can also be a huge waste of money when the gifts purchased end up sitting on a shelf, or worse, thrown in the bin. The UK Money Bloggers have teamed up with BT MyDonate to come up with a great way to still be involved in Secret Santa this year (after all, no one likes a Grinch!) and benefit some fantastic charities.

How #GiveOrGift works

Instead of your Secret Santa guessing what to buy for you when they pick your name out of the hat, you can make it easier by asking for a donation to charity instead using #GiveOrGift. There is a handy Secret Santa pack with everything you need to get involved, including sign up sheets.

The campaign supports six charities this year with the money raised evenly split between them. This means that a £5 donation plus Gift Aid will see each of the following receive just over £1:

  • The Trussell Trust (food poverty)
  • Shelter (housing and homelessness)
  • Citizens Advice (money and legal help)
  • Children in Need
  • Stand up to Cancer
  • DEC (humanitarian crisis)

If you want to run #GiveOrGift at your workplace or with friends and family, download the Secret Santa pack. Here is where you will find sign up sheets that allow the Secret Santa organiser to list everyone taking part. You then get to tick next to your name if you want your Santa to give to charity on your behalf, or if you would prefer to receive a gift.

Your Secret Santa will be able to donate on your behalf at BT.com/GiveOrGift, where they can also print off a donation certificate so that you still receive something in your Secret Santa swap.

If you are not running a Secret Santa this year you can still donate by going to the BT MyDonate page.

This is a fantastic campaign, and I urge you to introduce it within any Secret Santas that you are taking part in this year.
